Make a stock contribution
It is possible to make a stock contribution to Sunrise International Ministries. We have a brokerage account through SELCO Credit Union, offering a convenient and advantageous option for friends who wish to give stocks to the mission.
Perhaps the most significant point is that with this type of gift, one may avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated value of their stock, while still receiving a full deduction for their charitable contributions. Below is a brief summary of potential benefits of contributing stocks to Sunrise:
- By giving the stocks instead of cash you are not required to pay capital gains taxes on any profits. If you sell stocks and then give the proceeds to Sunrise (or any other 501(c)3 non-profit organization) you would receive the tax deduction for your contribution, but you would be required to report any capital gains on your tax return.
- You will be able to get a tax deduction for the stocks contributed to Sunrise, but please consult your accountant to confirm the amount of the deduction you will be able to take. This could result in substantial tax savings.
- By giving the stocks instead of cash you are not required to pay capital gains taxes on any profits that would otherwise be realized, but still receive the deduction for your contribution.
- Please consult your accountant or tax advisor to make sure these rules apply to your situation.
Another giving option, for supporters who are at least 70½, is that charitable contributions can be made directly from IRA accounts to 501(c)3 organizations (up to $100,000 per person annually), with any contribution counting toward the required minimum distribution for that year.
With both of these options, we recommend that you consult a tax professional with any specific questions.
If you are considering contributing stocks to Sunrise, first please contact our office manager to request Sunrise’s brokerage account number. This will allow us to verify the giving intentions.
Contact Sunrise for our brokerage account number.
Please send us an email that includes your name, contact information, and your giving intentions. Mail may be sent to cherie@sunriseinternational.org
Once you have received Sunrise’s brokerage account number, please contact Matthew Schneider (or have your tax advisor contact) at SELCO Credit Union for the necessary information to make a transfer.

Matt Schneider is not a tax consultant and cannot give tax advice. Tax benefits will depend on each individual’s own tax situation. There are advantages of giving directly to a non-profit organization rather than cash, but to repeat, you should consult your tax advisor to confirm the tax benefits that you will be able to claim.
In addition to the information above regarding contributing stocks, Matthew Schneider can provide helpful information concerning various means of charitable giving, charitable giving from IRAs and donating property to charity.
